Import Quixel Megascans into Houdini Solaris as USD components

A Megascans asset comes as a folder: an FBX or OBJ model and its textures. In Solaris you then have to build the material, wire each texture and handle levels of detail. Everything, the CGfield conversion application, does it for a whole folder in one pass and delivers one USD component per asset.

What a delivered component contains

Each asset becomes a self-contained folder: Asset.usd (the component, with its payload), payload.usdc, geo.usdc, mtl.usdc, the textures folder and a thumbnail. The material is written in MaterialX and UsdPreviewSurface, with optional Arnold and V‑Ray networks. Levels of detail are variants (lod: foreground, midground, background) and the lighter geometry carries the proxy purpose. The component is Y-up, in meters, with relative texture paths.

Steps

  1. Install the CGfield launcher with a free account, then Everything.
  2. Drag your Megascans folder, or a ZIP archive, into Everything. Several assets can be dropped at once: Everything recognizes the Megascans layout and reads the textures that are there.
  3. In the Delivery section, turn on “USD component”, then choose the engines: MaterialX for Karma, and Arnold or V‑Ray if needed.
  4. Choose the output folder and start the export.
  5. In Solaris, add a Reference node on Asset.usd, or drag the asset into the stage from the AssetBrowser panel. Pick the lod variant you want and render with Karma.

Material-only assets

For a Megascans surface without geometry, Everything also writes Asset_material.usda: the full material under /materials, without geometry. In Solaris, reference that file, then assign the material to your mesh with Assign Material.

Good to know

Everything runs on 64-bit Windows 10 and 11. The USD component needs no other software; the native .hip scenes of the classic mode need Houdini 20.5 or later. Normal maps are read in OpenGL format.
